Squad Athlete: Sara Northover
I started Triathlon in 1992 as moved to a new area in Wiltshire and joined the local running club to get to know people. A good looking young man at the club suggested I go and swim with them all, not wanting to pass up on the opportunity to see him in trunks I went along! I started to race not long after that and went to the Worlds in Cancun in 1995 and Lausanne in 1996. In those days it was just as much partying as it was racing so didn’t do that well but loved the sport. I raced for Total Fitness Swindon for many years and travelled with them a lot to Club La Santa, Jersey and Guernsey competing in the triathlons out there, again just as much partying! In 1999 I became National Half Ironman Champion and went on to do a full Ironman in Austria not long after.
I took time out from triathlon to concentrate on Time Trials which I found very boring as no one to chat to and then on to Road, Circuit Racing and Track Racing which I loved. Moving to Stratford upon Avon I saw they had a triathlon advertised so decided to enter it after starting to swim at the leisure centre, winning the race outright I decided that triathlon was what I wanted to do again.
In 2010 I competed at the Worlds in Budapest and was unhappy with my 9th place so wanted to go again the following year. I became British Champion in 2011, a Silver at the Europeans in Pondavedra and eventually World Sprint Champion in Beijing.
I had a few quiet years after that and came back to win the European Champs in Lisbon in 2016 and European Aquathon Championships in France. I love taking part in the Sprint distance as I prefer that style of painful flat out racing (well once I have finished I enjoy it)!!!
I spend my summers out in France running our Gite business and competing in bike and running races out there and this year my first triathlon just 5k from the house. I am also off to the World Champs in Lausanne so fingers crossed no injuries this time.
I mainly train on my own which can be tough, having known Dave Knight for many years and saw what a fantastic set up he had with Do3 I wanted to give it a go, everyone seemed to have so much fun and were so friendly. Taking part in the coached sessions has been great for me as I love being with people and training is much more fun. Dave gives fantastic advice and really seems to know what people need to improve.
I am looking forward to racing in the Do3 colours this year.
