Squad Athlete: Guy Bicknell

I’ve been training and competing in Triathlon since 2010 when I took up a new challenge with the Rugby Sprint Tri after feeling I’d achieved all I could in running and losing motivation.

I progressed through the distances, moving up a level most years which culminated in doing my first Ironman in 2015. I’ve always tried to do races I’m motivated by which has included amazing experiences like swimming over reefs in Mexico and “escaping” from Alcatraz in San Francisco. As for running, I’ve subsequently smashed all my PB’s and having recently turned 40 seem to be going faster than ever in all three disciplines, long may that continue!!! As for aspirations, I’d like to earn a GB kit with my name on it, go under an hour for a sprint, under 2:10 for an Olympic and under 10 hours for an Ironman…… you need to aim high after all!

  • Sprint: 1:02 Southam Sprint Tri 2018

  • Olympic: 2:17 Allerthorpe Olympic Tri 2015

  • Half Iron Distance: 4:46 Cotswold Classic 2016

  • Ironman: 10:37 Challenge Roth Iron Distance 2016

I’ve been part of Coventry Triathletes since 2011 which is a great local club who offer group rides, training by volunteers etc. However, in 2017 I linked up with Do3 which seems to have taken my involvement in the sport to another level. This year I’ve joined the commit programme which offers good tailored training after years of planning it myself from reading books etc. I am very self motivated so previously didn’t think I needed help with planning training as I always got out there and did loads of training. However, training smart and quality over quantity have really helped my performances with constant tweaking from the excellent qualified coaches. On top of all that the group has a number of very active members of al abilities, all of which are encouraging each other on the same journey.
