Squad Athlete: James Hartwright
I’ve been doing triathlons for ages - ever since winning a saddle for coming 5th in an Ironkids event in 1988! I’ve grown up with triathlon from the early days of garish swimming trunks and baggy vests through to super-aero sleeved trisuits and various fashion crimes in between!
I was lucky enough to start out racing in Hong Kong and represented them as a junior in a couple of Asian Championships as well as the World Championships in Manchester, back when Olympic distance races were non-drafting even for the elites.
These days my triathlon experiences are more run of the mill but I still enjoy all the training and racing. I’ve managed to qualify for, but not afford to go to, the European Sprint Champs for GB and I often manage an age-group podium but never any first places. I don’t subscribe to the “longer is better” attitude to triathlons but I have completed and thoroughly enjoyed training for and then racing the Outlaw triathlon once.
I joined the swim squad in late 2017 going to occasional early morning sessions which really push me (more than I tend to by myself) and make a real difference. The squad are a really friendly bunch and a great motivator.
