Squad Athlete: John Wrottesley

I was a club swimmer as a teenager, but stopped at about 16, and then rode horses competitively (Eventing) as my only sporting activity.

15 years later I wanted to start swimming again to keep fit and lose a little extra weight that was creeping on year by year (I didn’t want to get too heavy for my horse) and by coincidence discovered Do3 Swim Squads were about to start locally so decided to give it a go.

Soon realising I was surrounded by many triathletes (although people come to Do3 for all sorts of reasons), when my Dad gave me his old bike I decided to have a go as well, taking part in my first sprint distance triathlon at the end of 2016, and I was hooked.

Since then I’ve gone from being a non-runner (ever) non-cyclist and lapsed swimmer, to completing several more triathlons, duathlons, swimming events, running events, cycling from Essex to Dorset and many other challenges I’d never previously though possible. Having started in 2016 with a local charity sprint triathlon, in 2018 I have moved to middle distance, with plans for the Cotswold Classic and Vitruvian, with many other races and events in between.

From my initial small aspiration of swimming a couple of times a week, I am now loving training being a normal part of my every day life. Its even better doing it as part of this brilliant friendly and supportive squad, having gained a lot of new friends and training buddies.
